Farm description

We have 170 acres of beautiful land approximately 15 minutes north of Madoc, ON, and we're hoping to connect with a beekeeper in need of a place to put some hives.

We have a large restored barn, 1 outbuilding, and up to 60 acres of pasture available for rent. Our property also includes 110 acres of forest and approx 1 km of The Black River, which we're happy to share for hiking and swimming. The river flows through an adjacent 44,000 acres of forested crown land on the Canadian shield. Our farm is the first farm the river flows through after leaving the crown land.

We purchased this land from an elderly retired farmer four years ago. Hay is currently being harvested from the fields by a neighbour. It was a cattle farm up until the previous owner's retirement, and we were delighted to learn that the land has not been sprayed or fertilized for 20 years.

From what we know, the farm was established in approx 1860. The buildings on the property have been lovingly cared for and excellently maintained by the farmer we purchased this land from.

Our hope is to lease the pasture to people who will love it as much as we do, who will be around for the long-term, and who will use ecological beekeeping/farming practices. We are excited for this land to become part of the growing Ontario network of sustainable farms that nourish local communities. In addition to your apiary, some of the other visions we have for what could evolve on the land include: a vegetable CSA, herb and indigenous flower gardens, pastured cows, and fruit and nut tree orchards.
