Farm description

We want to mentor the next generation of farmers, create a multi-year plan to effectively and conscientiously steward more of our land, increase the number of product lines produced, and, over the next 10 years, develop a succession plan. On our 400+ acre land we currently raise certified organic forest raised heritage pigs, certified organic pastured chicken, sheep and goats as well as a small mixed fruit, berry and nut orchard. We follow the methods of Polyface Farm, using intensive rotational grazing of our animals in an environment as closely suited to the species as possible. Our land has forests, fields (some developed and some overgrown), ponds and a creek but is not suited to cropping.

Farm opportunity

We would like to find a young person or a couple who would like to develop their own product lines on our farm. We have hosted people through the WWOOF and WorkAway program for three years (look up our profiles and read the reviews from our workers). It has been a blast but now we would like to become a bit more serious and focus on giving a leg up to the next generation of farmers. The end goal for us would be to find a person/family/couple who would develop their own complementary agricultural business on our land under a defined lease program - timeline to be agreed upon. Lease would probably involve some sweat equity or a bit of produce. We're flexible! Within the next 10 years we would like to move towards a succession plan. We hope by the time we run out of energy we will have found someone to carry on stewardship of the land. We own two houses on the land which are currently rented. A farm partner would have first opportunity if one became available. Also, with a lot of advance notice and for the right person, we could provide room and board in our house instead of booking WWOOFers or WorkAway-ers. For this year we have availability from August onward. We are not offering a paid position, just a chance to learn and develop your own business. Come for a visit, check us out, throw some ideas around. Richard and Karen Cook
