Farm description
By the Bluffs is an ecological farm encompassing a plant nursery and a mixed fruit and nut orchard encompassing a native plant understory. The nursery focuses on medicinal, edible, and native perennials, including shrubs and tree seedlings. We offer permaculture tours, workshops, youth education, and site-consultations. We are located on the ancestral territory of the Saugeen Ojibway, Saukiing Anishnaabeking. We focus on regenerative principles, working in harmony with the surrounding ecosystems, and using on-site resources as much as possible. Our farm and nursery started in 2018 and quickly grew into the thriving permaculture gardens and fruit and nut orchard it is today. We have chickens, ducks, and geese that are integrated into the farming operation by building compost, fertilizing, insect pest-control, and mowing. The orchard was a hay field prior to our purchase, which had not been tilled in at least a decade. We also have a 35 acre sugar maple forest and hope to start collecting maple syrup on a small scale in the near future.
Farm opportunity
If you are a herbalist and want to harvest herbs and add more herb gardens for making products, this might be an optimal opportunity for you. Or if you would like to operate a market garden, there is already a space that has been used minimally, cover cropped over a few years, and is half covered in tarp for a weed free start. We have a hay field / orchard area that incorporates nut trees throughout, but there is lots of space for secondary use such as raising meat birds or sheep between the trees. We are open to hearing your thoughts and dreams. We would be happy for you to use the space here to make your dreams happen if it aligns with our values and vision. We are flexible and open-minded and excited to collaborate with a passionate individual.
