Farm description

My partner and I bought some underutilized R3 Zoned land in Prince Edward County, near Milford, Ontario. Approximately 11 acres has been kept cleared and conventionally cropped, most recently in soy beans. The total land is 71 acres, with 25 or so protected wetland. The rest had previously been part of a much older family farm, which had an orchard and other enterprises long ago. Much of the land is overgrown, but has tremendous opportunity. It has also been used to hunt on. Unfortunately there is little to infrastructure, however there is new well and hydro, and space for additional buildings. The area is beautiful, and not as busy as the more touristy areas. The property is a 10 minute drive from beautiful beaches, and within bike or walking distance to a few nice wineries. Milford is the closest town, which has a post office, library, a few stores, and an excellent bistro! I want the property, and possibly future properties we can add together, to be able to support an assortment of regenerative enterprises which create a meaningful livelihood for the people on the land, and create a community of practice that allows us each to flourish in the enterprises which we have chosen. I have over a decade of organic gardening experience of flowers and veg, but have not had the opportunity to expand into larger scale agricultural enterprises. To start the land improvements, I will be beginning to remove some noxious weeds, clearing the buckthorn and other weed trees that have started reforesting the area. After, I plan to install fencing, hedgerows, trees, and to work on restoring the woodland to improve its management prospects long term.

Farm opportunity

I am looking for one or two farm partners to help to start a multi-enterprise regenerative farm (think Joel Salatin, Richard Perkins, etc.), using the principles of Holistic Management also (namely using a holistic context to guide planning and evaluation). To start, I'd seek a one year trial period for us to get to know each other, work out a plan and arrangements, and get comfortable, followed by a 3-5 year initial agreement employing smaller scale, modular enterprises such as a market garden, pastured poultry and or pigs, and other enterprises. There will be no cost to lease, and I will help to finance start up and other costs. For the right partners, we can seek a variance on the property to allow for the construction of a tiny house or other semi-permanent dwelling, so that you can live on farm. The hunting rights are available also, as we don't hunt (at least not yet!). We are building a house on the property for our family use, and possibly for short-term rentals. If the fit is good, I would like this to be a long term business arrangement, with future growth towards bringing additional land into the farm business, and pursuing larger enterprises such as grass fed livestock or even dairy. There also may be the opportunity for farm succession long term. Experience is less important to me than a willingness to pursue regenerative agriculture practices, a commitment to strong business principles and organization, and a desire to leave the land better than we found it!
