Overview

My name is Alex. My journey in farming started 6 years ago with a certificate course in sustainable agriculture at Fleming College in Lindsay. Since then, I have apprenticed, worked as farm hand, and am now beginning my third year as a farm manager. I have always worked on small organic farms located between Peterborough and Guelph, which cultivated between 2 - 7 acres of mixed vegetables and with minimal livestock (although I have worked briefly but intensely with cattle, chickens, and pigs in the past). These farms have always used apprentice or intern labour, so I am well familiar with that model. I have used a variety of small farm equipment, both hand tools and mechanical. I strive to continually improve my knowledge as a farmer. Land ownership is financially out of my reach, but I am interested in co-ops or other cooperative farm models, business partnerships, or employment that can provide housing (or home a tiny home, for example). As your employee, I would not be able to make longer term commitments without accommodation, because farm wages typically do not support the actual cost of living. (I sympathize with the difficulty of farms to pay higher wages, truly, but as an employee I must be able to afford a modest life off the farm). The earliest I can participate would be in the summer 2021. I am looking for farms within 45 minutes of Guelph preferably. Please e-mail me at alexvecchio@hotmail.com in addition to using this site. The inbox on this site has not been working for me. I am also happy to network with other young farmers and farm employees.
